Hypothesis Tracking
Hypothesis tracking links product assumptions to evidence, decisions, and follow-up work instead of leaving them buried in notes.
Definition
Hypothesis tracking is the practice of making product assumptions explicit, linking them to evidence, and updating their status as the team learns.
Why it belongs in the product brain
When hypotheses are separate from decisions, teams forget which assumptions are still risky. Notiky keeps hypotheses connected to the calls they shaped and the signals that later confirm or disprove them.
Write a hypothesis that can be tested
A useful product hypothesis identifies a user group, a proposed change, an expected outcome, and a reason to expect that outcome. State what observation would count against it. Choose a test method and a review date before the team invests heavily in implementation.
Avoid turning a desired result into a claim of fact. We believe new users need a guided setup is an assumption; repeated observations of users failing to find their first action are evidence. Connecting the two makes it easier to decide whether a design response is justified.
Example: testing an onboarding assumption
A team might predict that showing one suggested first task will help new users start a project. It can observe a small group completing onboarding, record where they hesitate, and compare the results with the expected behavior. The test should answer the stated question rather than merely collect positive feedback.
Record mixed or negative results as well as successes. If users understand the first task but do not want to do it, the problem may be value rather than navigation. That finding should change the next decision instead of disappearing into an experiment archive.
Connect learning to the next action
Review the evidence, update the hypothesis, and link the resulting decision to follow-up work. Keep inconclusive findings explicitly inconclusive. Notiky connects these records so a teammate or agent can see which assumptions support a plan and which risks still need attention before further investment.
